Wacky Wireless News: Walkie Talkies
Posted on Feb 28th 2013
What do shoes and cell phones have in common? Designer Sean Miles has combined them to create the most fashionable cell phone on the market!
What's more impractical? A Christian Louboutin heel or a shoe-shaped cell phone?
Heels, retro sneakers, men’s loafers, and a rainboot: All of these have been made into stylish and functional – though admittedly awkward – “Walkie Talkies” (gotta love the pun). Every shoe phone is fully functional.
The best part: It’s for a good cause! It’s part of a recycling campaign that aims to encourage cell phone owners to recycle their handsets rather than throw them away, as they’ll pile up in landfills. O2, a UK-based communications company, offers cash to those participating in their recycling program. The recycled cell phones are used in O2’s Think Big program, which focuses on environmentally friendly projects.
From the designer: “I wondered how I could make phones that people might be embarrassed to be seen with into something that would give them a new lease of life – which is what upcycling is all about. I hoped that, by turning them into Walkie Talkies, I would raise a smile and perhaps a laugh and create things that people wanted once again. I’ve been using them while out with friends and they never fail to start a conversation, even when I’m not using them as a phone! I hope that they can get more people talking about the need to recycle old gadgets rather than binning them.”
More to come: Sean Miles is developing an entire collection of mobile products using recycled cell phones, including handbags and gloves.
That's one "cell-acious" model!
These phones were made for walkin'...
Now that the rain has stopped, it's shaping up to be a "boot-iful" day!
This could actually be useful - no more worrying about where to store a phone while running!
