Disaster Preparedness for the World of Today

According to scientists, California is in the midst of a 100-year earthquake drought
and is long overdue for a powerful (magnitude 7.0 or greater) earthquake along the state’s most feared fault lines.  Obviously, we’ve already seen the record-setting fires that engulfed the state over the last few months.

Hurricane season always leaves many Southern and Eastern states vulnerable to flooding and widespread damage, all of which can have devastating long-term effects.

As the populations of coastal cities continue to grow on both the East and West coast, the number of people in harm’s way has increased.  Between 2015 and 2040, the ten largest metropolitan areas are projected to grow by more than 15 million people.

The center of the country faces devastating tornadoes, severe weather systems, and even earthquakes.  As the USGS pointed out in 2015, Oklahoma now has more earthquakes than California.

Given this uncertain period we all live in, it’s great to be prepared when the time is right.  Thus, we’ve put together a few items you may wish to add to your emergency preparedness kit.

Light may not be the most obvious of items, but natural disasters don’t just happen between 8am and 5pm.  Whether it’s a flashlight or headlamp, it’s always good to have additional lighting options if the opportunity presents itself. Especially, if that flashlight has additional functionality. We often take for granted that we have access to electricity, but in a state of emergency, that may be in short supply or even entirely unavailable. Always important to also point out that many portable chargers have a MICRO-USB port to be charged, so if you don’t have a cable that has a micro connector, you should definitely get one. Often in emergencies, cellular signals can be hit-and-miss, thus if you have a setup already in your car, then you may be at an advantage should the situation arise. We don't focus on signal boosters for buildings here, although those are extremely popular as well. Do you have an emergency bag pre-packed and ready to go?  Often in situations of natural disasters, there is very little time to get prepared and pack anything to take with you, let alone focus on the necessary everyday life products you may need. Here are a few bags we’d recommend.

A few additional miscellaneous items may include:

Water Resistant Case

Wet Cell Phone Drying Kit

Multi-USB Port Car Charger

DC to AC Inverter w/ Jumper Cables
