Apple Updates: iOS 18 and 18.1

Apple updates:

Are you pushing yourself to explore all the latest iOS features?  There are so many, it is like your phone keeps getting better and better, if you use them.  And, if you have a compatible model (iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max and all iPhone 16 devices).  The last 5 weeks have had 2 significant software updates, and we are going to touch on a few of our favorites.

iOS 18

Texting

If texting with an Android user, you can now see typing indicators (you know, the bubble with the …) when communicating with them.

Make your words stand out with text effects.  After filling in the recipient’s name, type your message in text, highlight and then click on the A that appears above the P in your keyboard.  This will give you the options: shake, explode, bloom jitter, ripple, nod, small and big.  Instead of just the normal text look, you will be accentuating your message.  Recipients of your text will need to be running iOS 18 to see these enhancements.

Home screen

Now you can change the color of icons, move them wherever you want, and even change their size.

Flashlight

You can adjust the width of the beam of your flashlight and the brightness.  You can also prevent it from accidentally activating, which is great, unless that was your strategy in meeting people.  “Excuse me, your phone flashlight is on.”  “Oh, I didn’t realize…”

Lock or hide apps

This is one that parents should be informed about.  If not, your kids certainly may know and might really have those apps you requested they delete.

Wi-Fi

Ever want to share a Wi-Fi username and password and you have to repeat it several times?  You can now just go to passwords and share it via a QR code.  You no longer have to explain why your home Wi-Fi network is called Cutie27 and the passcode is Cutie666!!!

Calculator

The feature has been greatly improved.  Within the calculator, you will see a calculator icon on the lower left corner (below the 1 key).  When selecting, you can now convert currency, centimeters to inches and more.  There are so many ways to use this.  There is even a feature called math notes where you can write a handwritten equation, and your device will calculate the answer.

Messages

You can delay sending messages.  Type your message, click the + button on the left and schedule it later. Works only on iMessage versus text messages.

Satellite

If you are in an area with no wireless connection, but have good access to the sky, you can send your text via satellite.  Yes, satellite!  Imagine all the boaters or hikers that have struggled with this for years?  We love it!

iOS 18.1

Need to take copious notes during a phone call?  You can now click the icon on the top left display to allow you to record the call.

While an automated voice will announce that the call is being recorded, it is a reminder to “never say anything, unless it is nice.”  Once the call is completed, the recording will be saved in your Notes app.  This may help you avoid having to write while driving or pulling over to focus on the details.

Apple Intelligence

There are a variety of features including an upgraded Siri, the Clean Up picture tool and AI enhancements to writing emails.  Step one is to go to Settings, Apple Intelligence, and Join Apple Intelligence waitlist.  Once approved you will be able to use these new features.  Keep in mind the approval process seems to be the same day.

Control Center

Perhaps the best way to see this is to actually play with it.  Remember when many people didn’t know how to find the icon for Airdrop and you felt like an iPhone guru each time you showed them?  It is no longer hidden and is right next to the airplane mode icon.

Conclusion

There are some updates that even improve your AirPod and camera functionality.  We don’t want to overdo it, but instead hope to whet your appetite for iOS 18 and 18.1 updates and how you can do more with your mobile device.  If you have a favorite, let us know.  We would love to hear from you.
