Apple Announces iOS 8, Will Launch in Fall with iPhone 6
Posted on Jun 3rd 2014
Apple unveiled new software updates for its mobile and desktop operating systems on Monday at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Fransisco, adding new features designed to make it easier for enterprise users to roll out new devices.
Dubbed iOS 8, Apple's new mobile operating system will be available for download in the fall, and will almost certainly coincide with the release of the iPhone 6 which is expected to hit shelves in September. Reports indicate the new iPhone will feature a bigger screen and thinner body. Leaked images and mockups may reveal the updated design – check them out at the bottom of this page!
New iOS 8 features include:
- Enterprise Features: For businesses, Apple’s new device enrollment program will allow IT managers to pre-program devices without unboxing them and physically connecting them to a computer. This will simplify the process of rolling out new devices to your fleet and will enhance the end-user experience.
- iCloud Drive: Apple will add basic drive storage to iCloud, allowing users to save and manage their files across all devices and organize them into folders. You can now save that word doc from your computer and make changes to it on your iPad at the coffee shop. 5 GB of storage will remain free, or you can upgrade to 20 GB for 99 cents per month.
- VIP Threads: Never miss an email from your boss again! iOS 8 will include a feature to add select contacts to a VIP thread and will notify you on your iPhone or iPad home screen anytime you receive communication from them.
- Siri Updates: When you plug your iPhone into your car, just say “Hey, Siri” and she’ll be at your service. You’ll no longer need to touch the home button to activate Siri, which will ensure you’re in compliance with handsfree laws in your state.
- Messaging Updates: You can now name message threads, add and remove contacts, activate a do not disturb setting on specific threads, and easily share your location with people in a conversation. iOS 8 will also enable users to quickly share audio and video in a message thread.
- Typing Made Easier: iOS 8 will feature Apple’s new QuickType technology which offers predictive, personalized text suggestions. The new operating system will also allow for developers to release third party keyboards, which will likely bring Swype technology to iPhone in the App Store.
- Desktop Connectivity: Apple also announced its updated desktop operating system, OS X Yosemite, which will allow users to send and receive messages (including iMessage and SMS text messages) to any contact from their Mac computer if your iPhone is on the same WiFi network. The same technology will apply to voice calls, so you can call a phone number or take a call directly from your laptop or desktop.
